Abstract

Parental empowerment in early childhood care via the smart hat innovation in Gembong Sukatani, Banten

This study aims to empower parents in toddler caregiving through the implementation of the smart hat technological innovation in Kampung Gembong Sukatani, Banten. Developed to address the low quality of childcare stemming from limited time, knowledge, and digital literacy, the smart hat is an Internet of Things (IoT)-based device equipped with a body-temperature sensor, camera, and real-time notification system to help parents remotely monitor their children’s condition. The study employs a Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) approach, engaging the community actively from planning and implementation to evaluation. Findings indicate that the Smart Hat not only enhances parents’ capacity to monitor toddlers’ health and safety but also fosters collective awareness of the importance of technology-supported caregiving. The program promotes digital parenting and strengthens social solidarity at the community level. Despite challenges such as limited digital literacy and internet access, the initiative successfully increases community capacity and self-reliance in applying simple technologies for safer and more effective childcare.
